Further information on this instrument:
A 1994 Fender Jazz Bass Foto Flame is a Made in Japan (MIJ) instrument featuring a photographic-process flame maple finish applied over basswood or alder. Produced during the mid-1990s, these basses deliver high Japanese build quality, though their unique cosmetic process makes them a distinct and quirky collector’s item today.
How the Foto Flame Finish Works:
The Process: Fender Japan used a photographic/chemical printing method on a thin layer or film to mimic high-grade AAA figured flame maple.
Pros and Cons of 90s MIJ Foto Flames:
Playability: TalkBass contributors mention that the underlying Japanese necks are generally slim, comfortable, and well-crafted. Durability Issues: The specialized clear coat on Foto Flame models is notoriously prone to checking, cracking, or chipping over time. Ours has some cracking going on, but the finish is intact still.
